Product attach rate is the percentage of orders that include at least one add-on product, such as an order bump, upsell, or bundle item. You calculate it by dividing orders with an add-on by total orders, then multiplying by 100.
Quick answer: Attach rate measures how often buyers say yes to a second product. It is one of the cheapest ways to grow revenue because it uses buyers you already paid to get. SamCart has processed more than $8B in sales, and its data shows that adding a single upsell can lift Day 1 average order value by 42%.
What is product attach rate?
Product attach rate is the share of orders where the buyer added something beyond the main product. If 100 people buy your course and 25 also add a workbook, your attach rate is 25%.
The add-on can be:
An order bump: a low-cost item offered with one checkbox on the checkout page
A one-click upsell: an offer shown right after purchase
A bundle or second product bought in the same session
Attach rate is a core metric in The Business Math. Traffic costs money. A second sale to the same buyer does not.
How do you calculate attach rate?
Attach rate = (orders with at least one add-on ÷ total orders) × 100
Worked example
Total orders this month: 500
Orders that included an add-on: 140
Attach rate: 140 ÷ 500 × 100 = 28%
Now the revenue side. Say your main product is $97 and your order bump is $27.
Attach rate | Add-on revenue | Total revenue | |
|---|---|---|---|
Today | 28% (140 orders) | $3,780 | $52,280 |
After a better bump | 35% (175 orders) | $4,725 | $53,225 |
That is $945 more from the same 500 buyers. No new traffic. No new ads.
Order-level vs. offer-level attach rate
Order-level attach rate counts any order with any add-on. Use it to track your whole offer stack.
Offer-level attach rate (often called take rate) tracks one offer, like a single bump. Use it to find which offer to fix.
Track both. Order-level tells you if the stack works. Offer-level tells you where it breaks.
Attach rate vs. average order value: what is the difference?
Attach rate tells you how often buyers add more. Average order value (AOV) tells you how much the average order is worth. They move together, but they are not the same.
Metric | What it measures | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
Attach rate | How often buyers add a product | Orders with add-on ÷ total orders | Whether your offer is relevant |
AOV | Average revenue per order | Total revenue ÷ total orders | How much each order is worth |
Here is why you need both. One seller gets 10% of buyers to add a $197 product. Another gets 40% to add a $49 product. Their AOV lift is nearly the same, about $20 per order. But the second seller has an offer most buyers want, and the first has an offer most buyers skip. Attach rate shows you that. AOV alone does not.
For AOV tactics, see How to Increase Average Order Value.
What is a good attach rate?
There is no single benchmark that fits every product. Attach rate depends on your price, your add-on, and where you show the offer. A good attach rate is one that beats your own baseline month over month.
Start by measuring the last 30 days. Then improve one offer at a time.
How do I increase my product attach rate?
Use these five steps. Each one builds on the last.
Make the add-on finish the job. The best add-ons help buyers get results from the main product faster. Think templates, checklists, swipe files, or a bonus module. If the add-on feels random, buyers skip it.
Put the first offer on the checkout. An order bump asks for one click while the buyer is already paying. There is no extra page and no extra step. Full guide: The Complete Guide to Order Bumps.
Add one offer after purchase. A one-click upsell runs right after checkout with no card re-entry. Start with one upsell, not a long funnel. More plays: Upsell Strategies.
Price the add-on below the main product. A bump that costs a fraction of the main product is an easy yes. Save higher-priced offers for the upsell.
Test one thing at a time. Test the bump headline or the bump price, not both. Track offer-level take rate so you know which change worked.
