Conditional upsells let your SamCart funnel branch based on what a buyer actually does at checkout. You add a condition node that checks cart total, products in the cart, coupon used, customer lifetime value, or quantity, then routes the buyer down a Yes or No path to the upsell that fits. It is built with no code in the visual funnel editor, and the branching starts from the very first purchase.

For years, every upsell funnel had one flaw. Every buyer saw the same first offer, whether they filled their cart or bought one small thing. Conditional upsells fix that. Below: what they are, how they differ from smart upsell funnels, the five conditions you can use, and how to set one up in six steps.

What is a conditional upsell?

A conditional upsell is a post-purchase upsell offer that only shows when a buyer meets a condition you set. Instead of one path for everyone, your upsell funnel branches. You add a condition node, pick what it checks (order total, products present, coupon, customer LTV, or cart quantity), and set the offer for the Yes path and the No path. The funnel checks each buyer in real time and sends them the right way.

Each offer is still a one-click upsell. The buyer accepts without re-entering payment details. The difference is which offer they see.

How are conditional upsells different from smart upsell funnels?

Smart upsell funnels sent every buyer to the same first upsell, then branched based on whether they accepted or declined it. Conditional upsells branch from the initial purchase itself.

What the buyer bought, whether they took the order bump, their cart total, their coupon, and their lifetime value all shape the very first upsell they see. Two buyers who checked out on the same page can now walk completely different paths from step one, not just after the first offer.

The 5 conditions you can branch your upsell funnel on

You can build a branch on any of these, all in the visual editor:

  • Order total: compare the cart total against a dollar amount. Premium bundle for big carts, smaller add-on for the rest.

  • Products present: check if a specific product is in the cart, then cross-sell only when it fits.

  • Coupon: check whether a coupon is applied, and skip the discount offer for buyers who already used one.

  • Customer LTV: compare lifetime value (charges minus refunds) and treat returning high-value buyers differently.

  • Cart quantity: compare the number of items and make bulk or complementary offers.

A sixth type, custom field, has the backend built and a full picker on the way. The other five are live now.

How to set up a conditional upsell (step by step)

  1. Open the funnel editor and select any upsell node.

  2. Click the Condition button in the toolbar. Add it on the accept path, the reject path, or before the first upsell.

  3. Click the new condition node (the amber card) to configure it.

  4. Pick a condition type, choose an operator (like Greater than or Applied), and enter the value.

  5. Set the Yes path (condition met) and the No path (condition not met). Each path can lead to an upsell, another condition, or the end of the funnel.

  6. Save with your normal funnel save. No separate step.

Conditions are checked live as the buyer moves through checkout, so the funnel always reacts to what is true at that moment.

What can you build with conditional upsells?

A few plays sellers are setting up right now:

  • Cart-value upselling: premium bundle over $100, budget add-on under it.

  • Coupon-aware funnels: no second discount for buyers who already used a promo code.

  • LTV personalization: a different offer for loyal repeat buyers.

  • Quantity-driven offers: bulk pricing when the cart has several items.

  • Product-aware cross-sells: the matching add-on only when the main product is present.

  • Multi-branch funnels: chain conditions. Check LTV, then cart contents, then order total.

A quick conditional upsell example

Say you sell supplements. A buyer adds a three-month supply and takes your order bump. Their cart is over $100. Conditional upsells send them straight to your premium bundle, because they already showed they buy big.

A second buyer grabs one bottle and skips the bump. They see a small, low-cost add-on instead. Same checkout page, two different paths, both matched to the buyer.

Why conditional upsells help increase average order value

The upsell is where Day 1 revenue gets made. SamCart sellers have seen a 42% jump in Day 1 average order value from adding a single upsell. Conditional upsells make that upsell relevant to each buyer, so a big-cart buyer is not offered a $9 add-on and a one-bottle buyer is not offered a $300 bundle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a conditional upsell in SamCart?

A conditional upsell is an upsell that only shows when a buyer meets a condition you set, like a cart total over a certain amount or a specific product in the cart. Your funnel branches down a Yes or No path in real time, so each buyer sees the offer that fits.

How are conditional upsells different from smart upsell funnels?

Smart upsell funnels started everyone at the same first upsell and branched after. Conditional upsells branch from the initial purchase itself, so the buyer's cart, order bump, coupon, and LTV shape the very first offer they see.

Are conditional upsells still one-click upsells?

Yes. Each offer on a Yes or No path is a standard SamCart one-click upsell. The condition only decides which offer the buyer sees.

Do I need to know how to code to set up conditional upsells?

No. You build conditional upsells in the visual funnel editor. Drop in a condition node, set the paths, and save. No code and no developer.

Will conditional upsells change my existing funnels?

No. Funnels without condition nodes run exactly as before. Nothing changes unless you add a condition.

Which SamCart plan includes conditional upsells?

Conditional upsells are part of SamCart's upsell funnel tools. Get access to upsells on SamCart's Pro plan for $199/mo. Check the pricing page for current plan details.
