I Want to Start My Business, But What Should I Sell?

September 14, 2022

So, you’ve decided to start your online business. You’re full of energy, enthusiasm, and ready to bring in the bucks! We’re thrilled for you. But hold on… What are you going to sell? Deciding which area to focus your business on is challenging, but we’re here to help. We’ve put together a four-step guide to help you create and market the right content for your business.

1. Take a look in the mirror

Finding your specialty will depend heavily on your areas of expertise. Are you an expert in a particular area, like cooking, investing, or gaming? What do you like to do in your free time? What are you passionate about? With the answers to these questions in mind, you’ll have a clearer idea of what you’re bringing to the table. From there, you can dive deeper into the topics you know most about, and exclude the ones that you’re less interested in. 2. Browse your potential competition

Once you’ve picked a general topic, make a list of all the buzzwords and phrases someone might use to describe that topic. Then go to Google and do some research. You’ll learn what other online businesses are doing to market in this field, as well as see their top selling products. This will give you insight into the practices of successful businesses in your field, as well as help you avoid entering an oversaturated market. 3. Find your niche in the market

After researching similar businesses, look for gaps in content and solutions to solve customer problems that aren’t being filled by your potential competitors. For example, maybe your specialty is teaching people how to cook at home. There are plenty of cooking blogs out there for free, but how many of them offer personalized meal plans? Do any of them cater to specific dietary needs? Your business should go after a niche in the market that needs your knowledge and expertise. The more specific the niche, the more relevant they will find your content and offers. Watch Finding Your Hook on CreatorU to learn more.
