An MCP server is a connector that lets AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT work with another app's live data. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside systems. For an online seller, it means you can ask your AI tool about your sales, orders and subscriptions in plain words, and it answers from your real numbers. SamCart has an official MCP server, in beta, on every plan.
Most sellers already use an AI tool for something: writing emails, outlining a course, brainstorming product names. The catch has always been that the AI doesn't know anything about your business. It can't see what sold yesterday, who canceled, or which upsell is working. So you export a report, paste it in, and hope it reads it right.
MCP fixes that gap.
What does MCP mean?
MCP is short for Model Context Protocol. It's an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to outside data and tools. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, open-sourced it in November 2024, and today AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT support it.
The official MCP site describes it as "a USB-C port for AI applications." One standard plug, so any AI tool that supports MCP can connect to any app that offers an MCP server, without a custom build for each pair.
There are two sides:
Piece | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
MCP client | The AI tool you talk to | Claude, ChatGPT |
MCP server | The connector an app offers so AI tools can reach its data and actions | SamCart's server at mcp.samcart.com |
MCP server vs API: what's the difference?
If you've heard of an API, an MCP server will sound familiar. Both let software talk to your SamCart account. The difference is who's doing the talking.
API | MCP server | |
|---|---|---|
Built for | Developers and the tools they set up | AI tools you chat with |
How you use it | Write code or set up an integration that calls it | Ask a question in plain words |
Good for | Dashboards, spreadsheets and automations that run on a schedule | Quick questions and one-off changes |
In SamCart | An API key you create in your account | A connection you log in to from your AI tool |
You don't have to pick one. If you want your numbers flowing into a dashboard every morning, our guide to creating a SamCart API key walks through it. If you want to ask "how did last month compare to the month before?" and get an answer in seconds, that's what MCP is for.
What can an AI tool do with SamCart's MCP server?
Once you connect, your AI tool can look things up across your marketplace. According to SamCart's help center, that includes:
Sales: gross sales, net revenue, orders, refunds, average order value, conversion rate and visitors for a date range
Orders and customers: order details and line items, and customer records you can search by email or phone
Products, subscriptions and payments: your catalog, renewal dates, scheduled cancellations, and failed payments with the processor's reason
Coupons, upsells and funnels: codes and usage, plus how your upsells and funnels are performing
If you choose to allow changes when you connect, it can also do things like create and edit products, create coupons, cancel, restart or reschedule subscriptions, and set up upsells and funnels.
A few questions you could ask:
"Summarize my sales for the last 30 days and compare them to the previous 30 days."
"List every subscription with a scheduled cancellation in the next 30 days."
With changes allowed: "Show my coaching program as an upsell after my starter course."
Is it safe to connect an AI tool to my store?
Here's how SamCart's MCP server keeps you in charge:
Look-up only by default. Changes only work if you check "Also allow this connection to make changes" when you connect.
Your role sets the limits. The AI tool can only do what your SamCart user role allows in the app.
Some things are off the table. It can't issue refunds or edit orders or customers.
Your password stays out of the AI tool. You log in through SamCart in your browser.
One honest warning from the help center: changes made this way are real changes to your live store, the same as making them in your dashboard. Restarting a Stripe subscription charges the customer right away, and a new upsell shows on your live checkouts straight away. If you're not sure what your AI tool is about to do, ask it to describe the change first.
How to connect SamCart to Claude or ChatGPT
You need two things: the server address https://mcp.samcart.com and the connection type Streamable HTTP.
In Claude Desktop: go to Settings, then Customize, then Connectors. Add a custom connector named SamCart with that address, click Connect, log in to SamCart, and pick your marketplace.
In the ChatGPT desktop app: go to Settings, then Plugins, then MCPs. Add an MCP server with that address, choose Streamable HTTP, then authenticate and log in to SamCart.
Other AI tools that support remote MCP servers connect the same way. The full steps for each tool, including Claude on the web and command-line tools, are in SamCart's help article, Connect Your AI Assistant to SamCart (MCP).
Try it this week
Connect SamCart to the AI tool you already use and ask it one question you'd normally open a report for. Start with look-up only. You can always reconnect later and allow changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MCP server in simple terms?
It's a connector that lets an AI tool like Claude or ChatGPT read an app's data and, if you allow it, take actions in that app, all by asking in plain words.
Does SamCart have an MCP server?
Yes. SamCart has an official MCP server at mcp.samcart.com. It's in beta, it's available on all SamCart plans, and any user on your marketplace can connect.
Is an MCP server the same as an API?
No. Both connect software to your account, but an API is built for developers and integrations, while an MCP server is built for AI tools you chat with. SamCart offers both.
Can the AI tool change things in my SamCart account?
Only if you allow changes when you connect, and only within your user role. Even then, it can't issue refunds or edit orders or customers.
Which AI tools work with SamCart's MCP server?
Claude and ChatGPT have step-by-step instructions in SamCart's help center. Other tools that support remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP can connect with the same address.
